Reading Photographs: MacArthur and Hirohito
On September 27, 1945, at the beginning of the U.S. military occupation of Japan following World War II, a famous photograph was taken of General Douglas MacArthur and Emperor Hirohito of Japan. MacArthur carefully staged this photograph, keeping in mind his goal to demilitarize and democratize an enemy country.
