Overview

CommonLit is a no-cost digital library featuring built-in reading comprehension tools. The platform provides on-page translations, guided reading questions, discussion questions, and on-page definitions and notes to clarify tough subjects. The collection spans both fiction and non-fiction texts, organized by reading level, grade, and subject matter, including historical documents like Plessy v. Ferguson and narratives exploring topics such as Manifest Destiny.

Getting Started

Teachers should create an account to save readings and organize materials by class. The site offers an interactive walkthrough demonstrating key features including translation, read-aloud functionality, grading capabilities, and score reporting. Next, establish a classroom by setting grade level, course name, and course type. This generates an invitation code for students. Explore the Library section by searching relevant terms like “social studies” or “colonial America.” CommonLit’s filters allow refinement by grade level, themes, genres, reading length, and literary devices. When selecting a text, preview the material and click “Assign Text,” choosing your class and due date to distribute it.

Example

CommonLit provides full units and lesson plans developed by educators. Historical texts available include The Poetry Quilt (Puritan history), Letter from Birmingham Jail (Martin Luther King Jr.), and President Reagan’s Speech at the Brandenburg Gate.
